What is crown reduction? A qualified explainer.
Crown reduction is the proper way to make a tree smaller without damaging it. Here's what it actually is, what BS3998 says about it, and when you'd want one on a tree in your garden.

Crown reduction, in two sentences
Crown reduction is the proper way to make a tree smaller without damaging it. We bring the height and spread down by cutting each outer branch back to a suitable lateral, working to BS3998, the British Standard for tree work.
That’s the technical definition. The rest of this guide is what it actually means on the day, and when you’d want one.
How it differs from topping, pruning, thinning and lifting
These four jobs get used interchangeably by people who haven’t trained for them. They are not the same.
Crown reduction. Reduces the overall size of the tree. Each outer branch comes back to a lateral that’s strong enough to take over as the new growing tip. The tree keeps its natural shape, just smaller. The wound sits where the tree can seal it.
Topping. Cuts branches off mid-length, at whatever height looks tidy from the ground. The wounds don’t heal. The tree puts up weak vertical regrowth and goes into decline. We don’t do it. The proper version of that conversation is in the crown reduction vs topping guide.
Crown thinning. Removes a percentage of the smaller inner branches without changing the outline. Lets light and wind through. The crown looks the same size from the lawn, just less dense. Useful on a tree that’s casting too much shade but is the right shape and height.
Crown lifting. Removes the lower branches to raise the height of the lowest foliage. Used to clear vehicles, pavements, sight-lines or a lawn underneath the tree. Doesn’t change the top of the canopy at all.
Most jobs are one of these four. Some are a combination. We’ll tell you on the day which combination yours is, and why.
The 25% rule and why it exists
BS3998 caps a single crown reduction at around 25% of the live canopy. That figure isn’t arbitrary, it’s biology.
A tree feeds itself by photosynthesis through its leaves. Take too much foliage off in one go and you starve the tree of the energy it needs to seal wounds, fight disease and put on next year’s growth. The stress shows up as weak regrowth, dieback in the upper canopy, or fungal entry at the cut points. Most healthy mature broadleaves cope with about a quarter of their canopy coming off in a single season. More than that, and you’re gambling.
The other half of the rule is the branch collar. Every branch joins its parent at a slightly swollen ring of tissue called the collar. The collar contains the cells that grow over and seal a pruning wound. A cut made just outside the collar heals cleanly within two or three growing seasons. A cut made mid-branch, away from any collar, leaves an open wound that won’t seal and lets decay in.
Crown reduction works because every cut is made just past a side branch that’s at least a third the diameter of the one being removed. That lateral takes over as the new tip, and the cut sits where the tree’s biology can do its job.
If a tree surgeon quotes you a “reduction” that goes deeper than 25%, or makes cuts away from laterals, ask them to put the BS3998 reference in writing. A genuine one will.
When you’d want one
A handful of reasons come up over and over on jobs across East Sussex.
The tree has outgrown its spot. A mature oak planted forty years ago next to what was then a single-storey extension is now leaning over a glass conservatory. The tree is healthy. The position is no longer right. A 20% reduction buys it another twenty years in the same place.
Light into the house or garden. A south-facing oak shading the kitchen for nine months of the year. Thinning may be the right answer instead, but on a tree with a heavy top a reduction is usually what gets the light in.
Weight off a specific limb. A long lateral reaching over a roof, a greenhouse, a neighbour’s fence, a child’s trampoline. We can reduce the whole tree, or we can reduce just the limb that’s loaded. Job depends on the rest of the canopy.
Storm wind exposure. A tree in a coastal garden between Hastings and Rye taking the full south-westerlies. Reducing the sail area lowers the wind load and the risk of branch failure or full collapse. We’ve reduced trees in Fairlight, Pett and Winchelsea Beach for this reason.
A neighbour dispute about overhang. You’re entitled to cut back what overhangs your boundary, but a tidy reduction of the whole crown back from the boundary is usually cheaper, more proportionate, and keeps the relationship intact.

When you wouldn’t
Sometimes the answer is no, or a different technique.
The tree is too far gone. Heavy decay in the main stem, hollow trunk, large dead limbs in the canopy. A reduction won’t save a tree that’s already structurally compromised, it’ll just delay the felling decision. We’d tell you straight.
The shape is the problem, not the size. If the tree is too dense rather than too tall, you want a crown thin, not a reduction. We’ll say so and quote you the right job.
It’s already been topped. Topped trees regrow into a mass of weak verticals from below the old cuts. Reducing those verticals doesn’t bring the tree back to a natural shape. We can manage a topped tree forward with pollarding cycles, but a normal reduction is not the right tool.
It’s the wrong time of year. Most broadleaves are best reduced in late autumn or winter when they’re dormant. Some species, like cherry and other Prunus, are pruned in summer to limit silver leaf risk. Walnut, birch and maple bleed sap heavily if cut in spring. We’ll wait for the right window.
The species doesn’t tolerate it. Some conifers won’t regrow from old wood. Reduce a Leyland cypress too hard and you end up with brown stumps that never green up again. Species-specific guidance is its own job. There’s a full guide on species-specific reduction.
What a job looks like on the day
A genuine crown reduction on a mature tree is a careful day’s work for two people, with kit.
We arrive on site between 8 and 9. Ground sheets down, parking sorted with the neighbours if access is tight. I’ll talk you through what we’re doing before anything starts.
The climber goes up on a rope and harness, or in the MEWP if access allows it. From inside the canopy he tags the laterals we’ll be reducing to, working out where the new tips will sit. A good climber spends as much time looking as cutting at this stage.
Cuts come in two parts. A draw cut underneath to release the weight, then a final sever just past the collar. Each piece comes down on a rigging rope, gets lowered to the ground, and goes straight to the chipper. Arisings get blown into the truck. By the time we’re putting the kit away, the tree looks smaller but still itself, and the site looks the way it looked when we arrived.
A mature oak reduction typically runs a day for two of us. A smaller tree, half a day. A multiple-tree job in one garden, sometimes two days. We give you the realistic time on the quote, not the optimistic one.
What it costs, in plain English
We don’t publish a price list, because a crown reduction isn’t a fixed product. What you pay comes down to four things: access, height, the volume of arisings, and whether council paperwork is part of the job. A 12-metre apple in an open back garden in Bexhill is one job. A 20-metre TPO’d oak behind a fence in a Battle conservation area, with the chipper on the street and a Section 211 notice to file, is a bigger one. Both are jobs we quote often.
What we can tell you is that we won’t be the cheapest quote you get. The cheapest quote is usually a topping job in disguise, and it costs more in the end when the tree declines and needs taking down. For a real number on your tree, send us a note and we’ll come and look.
TPOs and conservation areas
If your tree has a Tree Preservation Order on it, or sits inside a conservation area, the local council needs to see the proposed work before it happens. The councils we deal with most are Rother, Hastings BC, and Wealden. Each handles its own decisions but the process is the same.
For a TPO’d tree we file a TPO application. For a tree in a conservation area we file a Section 211 notice. Both go to the tree officer with a description of the work to BS3998. We wait the statutory clock out, six weeks for a Section 211, eight weeks for a TPO application, then we work to whatever conditions come back.
