Crown reduction vs pollarding. Two different jobs.

Crown reduction is one-off shaping that keeps the tree's natural form. Pollarding is a long-term cycle on specific species. They look similar on paper and they are very different jobs.

If you've been quoted for pollarding on an oak or a beech, what's being described is topping. Those species don't pollard.

The one-line difference

Crown reduction is a one-off job that reduces the size of a tree while keeping its natural shape. Pollarding is a long-term management cycle that holds a tree at a set size by cutting it back to the same points every few years for the rest of its life.

Both are recognised techniques. Neither is topping. The trouble is that a pollarded tree and a topped tree can look similar to anyone who isn’t an arborist, and the words get used interchangeably by people quoting for work that isn’t a pollard at all.

This guide is the proper version. What pollarding actually is, why it works on some species and not others, why it differs from crown reduction, and why we won’t start a pollard regime on a mature tree that’s never been pollarded before.

What pollarding actually is

Pollarding is an ancient management technique, older than most of the trees you’ll see it done on. Coppice and pollard culture in southern England goes back to the medieval period, when timber, firewood and craft material were managed on a cycle. Pollarding kept the new growth above grazing height. Coppicing did the same job at ground level. Both kept the tree alive and productive over centuries.

The technique survives because it works. A pollarded tree puts on fast new growth from the cut points each season. Every few years the growth is taken back to the same points. The tree is held at a manageable size, indefinitely, while the trunk and main framework slowly thicken. Most of the lime avenues lining old market town streets, including a few in our patch between Battle and Rye, are working pollards on a rolling cycle. So are Willow boundaries on Romney Marsh, planes in the older squares around Hastings, and lapsed pollards in the wood-pasture inland.

The species that take it well are the ones that respond reliably to repeated heavy cuts: Willow, Lime, London plane, Poplar, Hornbeam, and on some old farm boundaries Hawthorn and Ash. These trees have evolved alongside disturbance. They put new growth out of dormant buds at the cut points, year after year, for a hundred years or more.

The pollard knuckle

Every cut point on a pollarded tree builds up over time into what we call a pollard knuckle, or a boll. It’s the gnarled, swollen, knobbly head you see at the end of each branch on an old pollard. The knuckle is the tree’s response to repeated cutting in the same spot. Underneath each knuckle sits a dense cluster of dormant buds, ready to push out new growth the next time you cut.

The first job on a returning pollard cycle is to find each knuckle and cut just above it, not into it. Cut into the knuckle and you lose the bud bank. Cut a long way above it and the new growth comes off the wrong place and the next cycle gets harder. Done properly, the knuckle gets a clean face, the tree puts new shoots out within weeks, and three years later the shape is back.

You can date an old pollard by counting the knuckles outwards. Every cycle adds a layer.

Pollarding is not topping

This is the confusion the guide exists to clear up.

Topping is cutting the top off a tree at a convenient height, mid-branch, leaving stubs. The cuts have no relationship to where the tree wants to push new growth. There is no knuckle. There is no cycle. There is no plan. It’s a one-and-done mutilation that the tree responds to by sending up weak, fast-growing shoots that aren’t properly attached to the trunk. Five years on, the topped tree is taller, weaker and starting to rot from the inside.

Pollarding looks superficially similar in the first week after the cut. The tree is dramatically smaller. The cuts are at the same point on each branch. To a homeowner driving past, a freshly pollarded lime and a freshly topped oak can look like the same job.

They are not the same job. The differences are technical and they matter.

  • The cuts go in the right place. A pollard cut is made just above a knuckle, where the tree has a dense bud bank and a natural ability to seal. A topping cut is made wherever convenient, with no biological logic.
  • The species is suitable. Willow, lime, plane, hornbeam, poplar take pollarding, and so do hawthorn, sycamore, eucalyptus and healthy ash. Oak, beech, birch, cherry and most conifers do not. Topping ignores species entirely.
  • The timing matches the species. Willow tolerates winter cuts. Lime and plane prefer late winter into early spring. Topping ignores timing.
  • The cycle is committed to. A pollard is the start of a maintenance regime that returns every two to five years. Topping is one visit and a problem you’ve inherited.
  • The result is a healthy tree at a held size. A pollard holds form over a century. A topped tree declines, decays and fails inside fifteen to twenty years.

Pollarding is not crown reduction either

A crown reduction is also a recognised technique, but it does something different. A crown reduction takes height and spread off a tree in small cuts back to a growth point, working to the tree’s natural shape, so the tree keeps its form and carries on at a smaller size. It’s a one-off. The tree heals over two or three growing seasons and the job is finished.

The differences from pollarding come down to four things.

  • Target species is wider. Crown reduction works on most amenity trees. Oak, beech, ash, sycamore, lime, plane, cherry. The pruning rules from BS3998 cover the cap (usually around 25 percent of the canopy) and the technique. Pollarding works only on the species that tolerate repeated cutting.
  • Target outcome is different. Crown reduction keeps the natural shape and brings the size down once. Pollarding accepts an unnatural managed form and holds it indefinitely.
  • Time horizon is different. A crown reduction is a one-visit job. Pollarding is a commitment to a return cycle for as long as the tree stands.
  • The visible result is different. A reduced tree looks like a smaller version of itself. A pollarded tree looks like a pollard, with the characteristic knuckled heads on bare framework.

Most of what we get asked for in domestic East Sussex gardens is crown reduction, not pollarding. Crown reduction is what you want when the oak is touching the gutter, the beech is shading the garden, the ash is over the conservatory roof. There’s no pollarding answer to any of those questions, because the species don’t take it. There is a crown reduction answer to all of them. Pollarding the right tree at the right time

When pollarding is the right call, it usually breaks down to one of four situations.

  • A young tree planted where a full-size specimen won’t fit. Start the pollard regime from the outset. The first cut goes in when the tree is established but still small enough to set the framework. From there it’s a cycle.
  • A working willow boundary on a two- or three-year cut. Standard countryside management. Quick, productive, the willow puts new growth out within weeks.
  • A lime, plane or hornbeam already on a historic cycle that needs carrying on. Common in older streets and gardens around Hastings, Battle and Rye. The knuckles are already there. The job is finding them and cutting back to them.
  • A mature pollard-tolerant tree that has gone in to heavy decline. Sometimes pollarding is the kindest answer for a tree that’s failing. It reduces the sail, reduces the storm-damage risk, and on the right species gives the tree a chance to rejuvenate from the cut points.

That last case is the only situation where we’ll consider starting a pollard regime on a mature tree, and even then the species has to be right. A declining lime can be brought back. A declining oak cannot.

Why we won’t start pollarding a mature tree that’s never been pollarded

This is the question we get asked most often and the answer is rarely what the homeowner is hoping for.

A young tree starts producing dormant buds in response to its first hard cut. The cuts create knuckles. The knuckles bank buds. The next cycle has somewhere to grow from.

A mature tree that’s been left to grow naturally for sixty years has the opposite arrangement. The dormant buds at any point on a major branch are mostly gone. The branches have committed to their structure. Make a heavy cut into a sixty-year-old beech that’s never been pollarded, and the tree has nowhere proper to grow back from. The response is either weak, badly-placed shoots, or no response at all and accelerating decline.

That’s why BS3998 and the Arboricultural Association are both clear: starting a pollard regime is a decision made when the tree is young, or it isn’t made at all. The exception, as above, is the declining pollard-tolerant species that benefits from a hard reduction as a last resort.

Most of the time, the right answer for a mature unpollarded tree is a crown reduction to BS3998, taken in stages over a couple of years if the reduction needs to be larger than 25 percent.

The cycle commitment

If you do start a pollard regime, you’ve signed up to a maintenance schedule. Willow and poplar typically want a cut every two to three years. Lime and plane more like three to five. Hornbeam can run longer. Skip too many cycles and the new growth gets heavy. The knuckles take more load than they were sized for. The branches fail at the join.

A lapsed pollard, one that’s been left for fifteen or twenty years past its last cut, becomes a separate technical problem. You can sometimes bring it back. You can sometimes not. The decision goes case by case, species by species. We don’t quote it sight unseen.

The honest version of starting a pollard cycle is: if you start, you keep going. Plan the cycle in. Budget for the return visit. Or pick a tree species that doesn’t need it.

The short version, if you’re skim-reading

  • Crown reduction is a one-off job. Brings the size of a tree down while keeping its natural shape. Works on most amenity species. Done to BS3998.
  • Pollarding is a long-term cycle. Holds a tree at a set size by cutting back to the same points every few years. Works on willow, lime, plane, poplar, hornbeam. Done to BS3998.
  • Topping is neither of the above. It’s a mutilation that shortens a tree’s life. We won’t do it.
  • You can’t start pollarding a mature tree that’s never been pollarded before. The biology isn’t there. A crown reduction is the proper answer for those trees instead.
  • If you start a pollard cycle, you’ve signed up to return cuts every two to five years for the life of the tree.
