Credentials & paperwork

The paperwork.

What Josh holds

NPTC

NPTC certified

CS30, CS31, CS38 and CS39. Chainsaw maintenance and crosscutting, felling small trees, climbing and aerial rescue, and using a chainsaw off a rope.

£5m

Public liability insurance

Five million pounds of cover. The certificate is below, and you are welcome to check it before anyone starts.

BS3998

Work to BS3998

The British Standard for tree work. It governs how much comes off in one visit and where the cuts are made. It is the difference between a reduction and a topping.

First aid

Emergency first aid qualified

Current emergency first aid certification, which matters more in this trade than most.

Mar to Aug

Nesting bird checks

Between March and August we check for active nests before any cut. It is an offence under the Wildlife and Countryside Act 1981 to destroy a nest in use, so the check is not optional.

TPO

TPO and Section 211 paperwork

If your tree is protected we file the application or the notice with the council on your behalf, and wait the clock out before any cuts.

2006

Trading since 2006

Twenty years of tree surgery and fencing across East Sussex, working from a yard near Heathfield.

How to check any tree surgeon

Not just this one. These are the questions worth asking whoever you are speaking to, and a good one will not mind a single one of them.

  1. Ask for the insurance certificate. Check the amount and the expiry date, not just that a piece of paper exists.
  2. Ask which chainsaw tickets they hold. Climbing and aerial rescue is CS38. If they are going up a rope without it, walk away.
  3. Ask if they work to BS3998. If the answer is a blank look, the quote you are holding may well be for topping.
  4. Ask what happens to the waste, and get it written into the quote. A price that looks cheap has often left the disposal out.
  5. Ask who is actually doing the work on the day, and whether it is the person quoting.

There is more of this in the guides, including what to expect on the day.
