A formal Yew and Laurel cut in a churchyard garden.

A pair of clipped forms in a formal garden next to a parish church. A tall yew dome and a long rounded Laurel hedge, cut by hand to keep the lines crisp without scarring the older wood. A clean job done quietly on a quiet site.

A photo from the A formal Yew and Laurel cut in a churchyard garden. case study in Hawkhurst .

A formal little garden next to a parish church. A clipped yew dome and a long rounded Laurel, both well-established. The brief was simple: cut to the existing line, don’t reshape, don’t scalp.

Yew is forgiving but slow to come back if you go too deep into old wood. We worked from a clean baseline, took the new growth off in passes, and left the older frame covered. The Laurel came in next, blade work to keep the curve true.

All clippings bagged off, gravel raked, gone before the next service.
